Easter 1 - 5of April

Easter week 2009 is celebrated at Skansen in different ways. On Maundy Thursday children all over Sweden dress up as witches to deliver Easter letters and receive candy. In some of the houses the Easter feast is prepared and traditions explained.

Walpurgis Night 30 April

Walpurgis Night´s history goes back to the 14th century. In Sweden we celebrate the arrival of spring on Walpurgis Night. At Skansen there is a bonfire, a speech in honour of the spring, singing, music and dancing until midnight.

Sweden's National Day 6 June

The tradition of celebrating a National Day in Sweden was born at Skansen. The founder Artur Hazelius wanted to establish an annual day that would be a patriotic focus for the nation.

Midsummer 19 - 21 June

The Midsummer celebrations at Skansen lasts for three days. See the maypole being raised, and join the ring dances. In the evening there is a folk dance display and dancing on Skansen's outdoor dance floors.

Over the years about 150 historical buildings have been moved here from nearly every part of Sweden. Most of them date from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors to the old houses and farmsteads are met by historical interpreters in period costume.
