Try Upholstery

Welcome to discover upholstery – a living craft with roots stretching back several hundred years. In Skansen’s upholstery workshop, you’ll get close to a profession where furniture is built by hand, step by step, with deep knowledge of materials and techniques.

  • Here, you have the opportunity to stop by and try for yourself how upholstery work is done. With guidance, you’ll get to experience some of the steps involved in building a chair seat, such as working with the seat’s foundation, stretching webbing, and shaping stuffing materials like horsehair or coconut fiber. Indoors, you can also try edge stitching and see how the shape of the seat is developed and finished.

Participation is at your own pace – try something briefly or stay longer and explore several steps in more depth. The focus is on experiencing the craft and the interaction between hands, tools, and materials. The methods shown are largely the same as those still used by professional upholsterers today.

The upholstery workshop is furnished to reflect the trade around the turn of the 20th century, a time when craftsmanship and manual work were a natural part of furniture making, and furniture was created to last over time.
