Garden Days at Skansen

For the fifth consecutive year, the flower exhibition returns to Skogaholm Manor. This year’s exhibition, “Taking Root – When Nature Continues the Story”, invites nature into the historic interiors, where it meets the stories that still linger within the rooms.

There is both a summer garden with stone terraces and a kitchen garden with growing beds framed by fruit trees and berry bushes. Learn more about what grows here and watch as we demonstrate fruit tree pruning.

Step into the shade under the apple trees and admire the apple orchards. Take part in our apple exhibition, where we will tell you about the apple varieties of old times.

Meet Skansen’s gardeners and learn about roses, including how to grow and propagate them. Join Skansen’s rose expert for a guided walk among antique and modern shrub roses, park roses, wild roses and climbing roses.

Explore the Herb Garden and learn how different herbs have been used throughout history. Sample herbal teas, including a blend with origins dating back to the 18th century.

Meet Skansen’s gardeners at the Printer’s Garden to learn about urban gardening and the crops grown in the 19th century. Don’t miss the fragrant pelargoniums, a favourite of the era.

Meet our gardeners to learn about growing, harvesting and drying tobacco. Discover more about this fascinating plant, which was Sweden’s third-largest industry in the mid-18th century.

Swedish heritage plants have a long cultivation tradition, interesting cultural history and may in the future become very important in plant breeding. Here you can buy heritage plants and bulbs to take home!

Step into the manor kitchen, where the apple harvest is put to good use. Inspired by the recipes of 18th-century cookbook author Cajsa Warg, the cook prepares dishes using apples from the garden.

At Skansen there are two Allotment huts with gardens from the 1920’s and 1940’s On site you can chat with persons who actually own one themselves.

Skansen’s village team shows how to make rope from flax and hemp, using a rope making course.

Challenge your family to a game of Kalaha using beans and peas, explore an exhibition of different bean varieties, and let the children help water the flowers with water pistols.
