Sámi National Day

Celebrate Sámi National Day at Skansen on 6–8 February 2026! Together with the Stockholm Sámi Association, we’re hosting a range of activities and experiences that highlight Sweden’s Indigenous people and their culture, past and present.

  • Discover Sámi history and contemporary life through three inspiring themed days. Visit Saemien Sijte (the Sámi site), see children’s theatre, make crafts, join in the national anthem, listen to joik, and much more. Throughout the weekend, Saemien Sijte becomes a vibrant gathering place with activities for all ages.

  • Included with a regular one-day ticket, Skansen annual passes are valid. School groups are welcome to join the public activities on 6 February.

  • 6 February at 12.00, Saemien Sijte

Speeches, joik and music and we sing the national anthem together.

  • Saemien Sijte

Taste gáhkko (traditional Sámi bread) or buy warming food and Sámi delicacies. There will also be North and South Sámi handicrafts for sale.

  • Saemien Sijte

Explore the area and visit the buildings to hear about Sámi cultural heritage, Indigenous peoples, identity, human rights and languages. Amnesty Sápmi will also be on site.

  • 6 February at 10.30 and 11.30, Brage Hall

The artistic team Nordcirkus presents Midwinter Tale, told through circus, joik, song and music—an exciting story set in the wild far north, where the sun doesn’t appear for weeks and weeks. Approx. 35 minutes. Suitable for children aged 3–9.

  • 6 Februari, Forestry Centre (Skogens hus)

Paint the Sámi flag, paint your own version of traditional clothing or braid a key ring in Sámi colours. Do you know which colours are in the Sámi flag, and what each one symbolises?

Sámi National Day is observed in memory of the first Sámi national congress in Trondheim on 6 February 1917, a milestone in the work for Sámi rights and community. Through this celebration, Skansen aims to highlight the importance of safeguarding Sámi cultural heritage, living conditions and identity.
