Mission of the zoo
Education, species conservation and research are at the heart of Skansen Zoo. Through these core areas, the zoo contributes to increased knowledge about animals, nature and biodiversity – always with animal welfare as a central priority.
-
Zoos play an important role in making knowledge about animals and nature accessible to more people. As a zoo located close to the city, Skansen has unique opportunities to engage visitors, schools and organisations in issues related to sustainability, biodiversity and animal welfare.
-
An increasing number of species are threatened with extinction, making the conservation work of zoos more important than ever. Skansen takes part in both international and national efforts to protect threatened species and their habitats. A visit to Skansen directly supports this work.
-
Zoos provide unique opportunities to expand knowledge about animals, their behaviour and their interaction with the environment. Skansen is involved in several research projects that contribute to improved animal welfare, stronger conservation efforts and new knowledge about nature.
-
Ensuring that the animals thrive is always the highest priority. A visit to Skansen offers the opportunity to observe natural animal behaviours, while ensuring that the animals live under good conditions with high standards of care.
-
Skansen plays an important role in the rehabilitation of injured wild animals, with a particular focus on red-listed species. Skansen is the only organisation in Sweden licensed to rehabilitate Eurasian otters.
-
Memberships for conservation
Skansen is a member of IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature), EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria), WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and SDF (Swedish Association of Zoos and Aquariums). These organisations work through conservation projects and collaboration to promote biodiversity.
-
Safe and secure – for animals and people
National laws, regulations and guidelines for zoo operations govern the work and development of the zoo. Skansen continuously works to ensure and maintain the highest standards of animal welfare and animal care for the species kept at the park. Skansen is also a member of several professional zoo organisations.
-
Skansen’s sustainability work aims to create a long-term, sustainable organisation based on environmental, economic and social perspectives, in line with global and national sustainability and environmental goals.
