Vision and mission

Skansen’s vision is to be a guiding light for learning and inspiring experiences of nature and culture in Sweden – for the past, the present and the future.

  • At Skansen, experiences of Sweden’s cultural and natural history are brought to life – past, present and future. The interaction between nature, culture and human conditions through time is made visible, and Swedish traditions and holidays are highlighted and kept alive.

Skansen’s four core values – welcoming, responsible, surprising and together – form the foundation of the organisation’s work and shape the interaction between the site, its visitors and the people who work there.

The mission and operations of the Skansen Foundation are governed by the Statutes of the Skansen Foundation, adopted by the Swedish Government on 15 April 1993. Skansen is an independent foundation with no ultimate beneficial owner. Its activities are funded through admission fees, donations from companies, private individuals and foundations, as well as government grants. The Skansen Foundation is politically and religiously independent.

  • The open-air museum works with education, preservation and contemporary cultural issues. Its purpose is to share knowledge about Sweden’s cultural history and to show how life in the past influences people today and in the future, every day.
