Furniture Factory

The Furniture Factory dates from the 1920s, and items such as footstools and chairs are made using the techniques and styles of the time. Here you can see the various stages of the manufacturing process and find out how glue and varnish are made.

The simple wooden building, painted in the traditional Swedish red, was erected by a waterfall in 1897–98. An axle driven by a water-wheel in the river provided power for the machines using belt drive.

The machines consisted of a lathe, a bench plane, band saw and drill. The factory was electrified during the 1910s.

Many furniture factories in Småland produced heavy furniture in solid oak. During the 1920s birch and elm were also used. The furniture was richly decorated and was of a very high quality.

The Furniture factory comes from Virserum in Småland.
