Forester’s Hut

The men who carried out logging and charcoal-burning lived in simple timbered cottages such as this forester’s hut. Up to 40 men could live in the same hut, sharing the same space. Food was prepared on the hearth in the centre of the room, such as charcoal buns – a kind of meat pancake – and porridge made with wheat flour and bacon dripping.
