Autumn at Skansen

Crafts and gardens, 7-8 September
During the first weekend in September you can try different crafts, make garlands and discover how to preserve and enjoy garden produce. Children are welcome to help out at Skåne Farmstead, where they can also walk the nature trail. Kvartersorkestern Klarskinn will perform, and our bee expert BiOlle will explain the lifecycle of the honeybee at Väla School.

Baking and apples, 14-15 September
The second weekend features a focus on bread and baking at several different houses, ranging from traditional buns and biscuits to flatbread and sourdough. What did people do when the crops failed? How can bark bread be made reasonably tasty? You will also get the chance to taste the Swedish traditional delicacy sour herring. Do you dare to try it? Kvartersorkestern Klarskinn will perform, and at Skogaholm Manor apples will be roasted over the open fire.

Sour herring – do you dare to try it? 21-22 September
The third weekend in September offers most of the previous weekends’ activities. Try different crafts, enjoy grilled apples in the Skogaholm Manor's garden and smell the newly baked bread in the houses and farmsteads. Kvartersorkestern Klarskinn will perform, and on Saturday 21st the Skansen Choir will sing in the village hall – Folkets Hus.

Autumn fair, 28-29 September
Traditionally, Michaelmas fairs would be held all over Sweden. People traded craft wares‚ household essentials and farm animals. Skansen’s autumn fair is an annual fixture where you will meet farmers and smallholders bringing this year’s produce to market. The fair is organized by Skansen’s Village Institute and provides a taste of life at a country fair in the old days.
