The harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) lives on Sweden’s west and south coasts. It feeds primarily on cod but also eats herring, sand eels and dab. The pups are born at midsummer on the beach and are dressed in “swimming costume” from birth. It is not unusual for people to find newly born pups on land but it is important that they are left undisturbed. The mother will be in the water and she will wait until the pup is alone before coming up the beach to suckle it.
