Skånska Gruvan

The Skånska gruvan - Skåne mine - was erected as an exhibition pavilion for the Stockholm Exhibition of 1897.

The Skånska gruvan - Skåne mine - was designed by Gustaf Wickman and was erected as an exhibition pavilion for the Stockholm Exhibition of 1897 by various manufacturers from Skåne.

Apart from its connection with Skåne the name also refers to the fact that an artificial mine was installed in the building. After the exhibition the Skånska gruvan, which is at the foot of the northern hill at Skansen, was allowed to remain and was donated to Skansen.

In 1977 a fire destroyed all but the brick walls. A temporary façade with blind windows was erected to hide the damage and in 1999 Skansen was finally able to
start renovation of this fine building which was opened in 2001. It is now used for meeting, conferences, educational courses and houses a café.
