Boberg’s Observatory

On the Solliden plane there is a small, octagonal observatory crowned with a dome. It is the work of the noted Stockholm architect Ferdinand Boberg.

He designed the building for Skansen in conjunction with his fiftieth birthday on 11 April 1910. Boberg, with two other donors, presented the observatory and a telescope to Skansen.

The orbits of the planets in the solar system have been laid out in rings round the building to give it an appropriate setting. The planets are sculpted in granite and brass and are scaled both in relation to each other and in relation to the dome of the observatory which symbolizes the sun. The distances, on the other hand, are not to scale. The twelve sections of the fence display the twelve signs of the Zodiac – Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.
